Maybe this is a cliché blog post, but I feel like it’s always needed, after all, who doesn’t feel a little self conscious sometimes? Even more so when workout out…in the gym…in front of tons of people! 😩😭
I used to struggle so much when I first started going to the gym a couple of days a week, I felt like I was really weak, that everybody was staring at me, that I looked really rough and that I just didn’t fit in there!
How crazy is it to feel this way when everyone’s reason to be at the gym it to work on themselves in some way or another to make themselves feel better about their body and health, it’s not a bad thing in any way to be exercising so why do we feel embarrassed or self conscious whilst we are?
I became aware of this whole “self confidence” thing when I started to attend the gym more regularly with Cameron, one time he bought me some funky avatar gym leggings that were so cool! Each day he would ask me “are you going to wear the pants I bought you today?”my response each time would be “I just need to feel more comfortable at the gym first and just work my way into wearing them”
Wait, what?!?!?!? Looking back that was such a dumb thing to say, so the leggings were a little extravagant, but I put myself into a situation where I was too embarrassed of what I may look like to others and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself. Cameron told me that to get out of my comfort zone, I should go to the gym wearing the craziest outfit to get over any kind of embarrassment I felt… Because no one actually cares what you look like at the gym, most of time no one even pays attention to you whatsoever, it’s just all in your head, crazy right?
So I did just that, and now I love wearing those funky gym pants! As should you! The same went with shorts and vest tops, not knowing what I was supposed to do with certain workouts, what my hair looked like, how tired my eyes looked, but I soon learnt.
What I’m trying to get at is that each of us are incredibly special in our very own way, and that God had blessed us to be individual, our own person and not the same as every one else. You are you, and the best you out there… There is no one who is as good at being you… Than YOU
I have soon come to realise that going to the gym and seeing people become fitter and healthier is really an amazing experience, it’s nothing to stare at or giggle at or judge, because that person thinks so much about themselves that they want to make a change… And that carries them through whatever kind of challenge they will come to.
So sure, we may have down days where we feel low about ourselves, but let’s try to think of the things we love about ourselves, and the things other people love about us, instead of the flaws we feel we have.
